Communication involves the gathering processing, storing and dissemination of though, ideas and messages in interpersonal and mass communications forms.
Such information is seen as a strong tool that influences the thought, action and decisions of people in the society. This anyone that contracts this process is seen as being influential. It is in light of this that the mass media are thought to be a powerful organ. One of the issues that engage the attention of the mass media is politics this is so because politics are of the dominants issues in the life of a nation and for a good reasons too.
It is politics that gives direction to the affairs of the nation. A major political issue in any nation is the voters registration exercise. It follows therefore that its coverage by the mass media is also a major issues.

It is for this reason that the study focuses on the coverage of the 2006 voters registration exercise by the pioneer and the sensor newspaper.
1.2 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PIONEER AND THE SENSOR NEWSPAPERS
The Pioneer Newspaper is wholly owned by the government of Akwa Ibom State. It is founded on April 11. 1988, shortly after the creation of Akwa Ibom State.
It started as a weekly paper but later published thrice a week on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. The Fridays edition is also call weekend pioneer. The pioneer, like other newspapers has four main departments which are the editorial department, production department, marketing department and administrative department.
The newspaper house is headed by a chief executive with the designation of a general manager. The sensor is privately owned by an Akwa Ibom indigene, Arch Ubokutom Nayh.
It was founded on May, 13, 2002. The sensor also has four main departments namely; the Editorial, Production, Marketing and Administration. The sensor is published three times a week.
1.3 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
At the end of the 2006 voter’ registration exercise, there were comments in some quarters that the press in Akwa Ibom State did not give adequate and favourable coverage to the voters registration exercise in the state.
Such comments tended to imply that Nigerian residents in Akwa Ibom State might not have been sufficiently mobilized to participate in the exercise positively. That informed the decision to undertake this study so as to ascertain the veracity of the claims of some commentators in the 2006 voters’ exercise. Therefore was the coverage by the pioneer and the Sensor Newspaper on 2006 voter’s registration exercise adequate and positives?
1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This study had the following objectives:
1. To determine the amount of coverage given by the pioneer and the sensor newspapers to the 2006 voters’ registration exercise in Akwa Ibom State.
2. To determine the direction of coverage by the two newspapers the pioneer and the Sensor newspaper in 2006 voters’ registration exercise.
3. To determine the prominence given to the voters’ registration exercise by the two newspapers under study.
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What was the amount of coverage of voters’ registration exercise by the pioneer and the Sensor newspaper?
2. What was the direction of coverage of voters’ registration exercise by these two newspapers?
3. What was the prominence given by the pioneer and the sensor Newspaper to news stories on the 2006 voters’ registration exercise?
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The research work will be of immense benefit to journalist, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the government as the result will voters’ registration exercise in the future, the result of the study will also assist, journalists in identifying the short coming during the voters’ registration exercise with a view to addressing them in the coverage of similar or related exercise in the future.
The study will add to the existing literature in the subject of press and politics in the country. Is a criticism of life seen through a temperature, hence the study of literature is a study of various temperaments, life is variegated its facets and problems are multifarious and a study of literature gives us life freely and abundantly. The questions about the technical side of this study, the methods of study, etc do not concern us. We approach the subject on a broader basis. This regarded. Literature is a pleasant pastime, an enjoyable champion in all ages and conditions of health.
1.7 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study is restricted to the Pioneer and the sensor coverage of the 2006 voters’ registration exercise in Akwa Ibom State; influence the pattern of the coverage of the 2006 voters’ registration exercise. A study is those characteristics that limit the scope define the boundaries of the inquiry as determined by the concretionary decisions that were made throughout the development of the proposal. Among these are the choice of objectives and questions, variables of interest alternative theoretical perspectives that could have been adopted.
1.8 THE LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
A major limitation of this work was locating all the editions of the two newspapers needed for this study.
Although a few editions were not found the number was not significance to affect the result of the study.
