ABSTRACT

The study examines the relationship of Reading and student’s performance in Secondary Schools in Uyo Local Government Area. Four specific objective, four research questions and four null hypothesis were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study made use of ex-post factor research design. The study made use for data collection were Reading habit questionnaire. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 300 students from the population of 4894 students in 10 public Secondary Schools in the area. The reliability co-efficient for the variable was 0.68. Data collected were analyzed using Pearson product moment correlation (PPMC) and t-test statistics at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that libraries facilities, parents socio-economic faction and there was a significant difference in academic performance of students in English in SSCE base on school location. Based on the Findings and conclusion of the study, the following recommendations were made, lessons on good Reading habits should be incorporated into the school curriculum for primary and secondary schools students. The government should establish functional libraries in all public school with English textbooks. The study has implication for all students, Teachers and educational planner.
