STUDENTS’ ATTITUDINAL FACTORS AND THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS A CASE STUDY OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OKOBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
The study focused on students’ attitudinal factors and their Academic performance in mathematics in secondary schools in Okobo Local Government Area. Four (4) research questions were formulated to guide the study. The research design used was survey. The population of the study stood at 1500 of students in SSI and eight (8) secondary schools were used for the study. The sample size was 482 students and nine (9) mathematics teachers were involved in the study. The method used in sampling was randomization. The major instrument used to obtain data was questionnaire and the statistical tools used in testing the research questions and determining the reliability of the study were percentages, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r), standard deviation and ANOVA. The result showed that poor performance of students in mathematics are attributable to students’ factors, teachers, parents, government, significant others and the school environment. Students also showed poor attitude to mathematics because of lack of motivation by the teacher and also on the part of the students who are not interested in mathematics. Recommendations were made which include government should provide more teaching and learning facilities to adequately cater for large students population. School should provide innovative ways to help motivate mathematics teachers like taking them for more capacity building course and providing them with other incentives, hire more teachers with the help of the government to help reduce teachers workload and enables the teachers have increased contact hours.
